Adjust your calendars: new dates announced for the 11th Ubud Writers & Readers Festival, now October 1- 5, 201

Celebrating the theme of Saraswati, ‘Wisdom & Knowledge’, the 11th Ubud Writers & Readers Festival is now scheduled to take place one week earlier than initially planned, from October 1- 5, 2014.

This shift from the original dates (October 8- 12, 2014) is done with respect for a significant cultural event now set to take place in Ubud at the same time, the Karya Agung ceremony. The details of the Karya Agung ceremony are yet to be determined by the high priests, but broadly the event will harmonise the temple, the village and universe.

As UWRF is South East Asia’s largest and most renowned cultural and literary festival, it is of crucial importance to the festival to respect and honour local traditions and festivities.

“Ubud is the home of lavish ceremonies and in October, yet another grand celebration at Ubud’s Pura Gunung Lebah temple will take place. This is a great opportunity for those who are interested in Bali’s own unique brand of Hinduism to enjoy this cultural highlight post- Ubud Writers & Readers Festival. At night there is also certain to be a full program of the island’s finest performances that run until the early hours of the morning,” says UWRF Festival Director/Founder, Janet DeNeefe.

“Pura Gunung Lebah is a particularly beautiful temple, set in one of Ubud’s most sacred and magical locations by the Tjampuhan River. A ceremony of this magnitude is bound to be impressive.”

In 2014 the UWRF honours Saraswati, the Hindu patron goddess of learning, with the theme ‘Wisdom & Knowledge’.

Leading writers, thinkers, artists and performers from across Indonesia and all corners of the globe will come together over five full days of events to celebrate the storylines of knowledge and the arts, education, wisdom and science. Oral storytelling, lost languages, mythology, the environment, storytelling in the visual arts, observation, translation and more will all feed into this overarching Saraswati theme.

An innovative program of arts and music, panel discussions, workshops, literary lunches and dinners, book launches and much more will be revealed in mid- 2014.
