On the eve of Nyepi, the start to the new Icaka year, the tradition is to “ngerupuk” alias to make a lot of noise and commotion and flush all the demons out ‘into the open’. It is followed by a day of total silence during which the demons get completely disoriented and leave for America and Australia, or maybe even Hong Kong. Nowadays it is a slightly more sanitized version (with more tourists than Balinese) and has been transformed into a “festival”. Gone is the chaos and fire-breathing of yore. But it’s still fun with the irrepressible creativity and humor of the Balinese still dominating the show.
