TEDxUbud returns to Bali on Saturday, September 6th, 2014. The fourth edition will feature another amazing lineup of Indonesian and international entrepreneurs, designers, storytellers, and performers sharing their ideas with a curated audience of 300 at Fivelements. TEDxUbud and Ubud Now and Then will be showcasing the 2014 speakers over the next month with a sneak peek at what they will sharing on the TEDxUbud stage.
This is the last of our TEDxUbud speaker posts, but some say we saved the best for last! From jazz compositions, to water in Bali, urban data sourcing, and spending time with Bali’s funniest man- this will be an incredible day.
We are honored to have Chika Asamoto performing this year. She will even be debuting a special piece composed exclusively for TEDxUbud.
Jazz saxophonist Chika Asamoto is one of the most prolific female musicians, producers and composers of jazz worldwide. With over 10 albums, she has performed with industry greats such as Diana Krall, David Matthews and Mark Egan. Even with her unique position as a jazz soprano saxophonist, it has been her contributions as a producer and arranger of some of Asia’s most popular artists that sets her apart. Her credits include Reza (Indonesia), JAYA (Philippines), Kim Johan (Korea), ASH (Korea), Shunza (Taiwan) and Ning (Malaysia). Based in Bali, Chika shares her inspiration and love for jazz with international audiences across the world.
How much do you know about water in Bali? Sayan Gulino is on the TEDxUbud stage this year with some surprising ideas and facts about how Bali uses water, wastes water and celebrates water.
Sayan Gulino grew up in Bali and even shares a name with that beautiful bit of Ubud. Sayan believes that regardless of nationality, music is the one thing can universally ignite the spirit. Growing up between Indonesia, Amsterdam, Singapore, and Australia, Sayan was instilled with a unique multicultural perspective. Sayan currently lives in Kuta, Bali where he is General Manager of Waterbom, the family destination water park, and has become something of an expert on water usage in Bali, especially in relation to the tourism industry that powers this island.
Our next TEDxUbud speaker will be sharing ideas on data, crowd sourcing and urbanism that we really hope get adopted by Ubud. If it was good enough for Mayor Jokowi of Solo, it needs to happen here!
John Taylor is half Indonesian and half American, but he was born in Australia and grew up in England. He is passionate about community participation and their involvement in the development of cities and has worked on participatory planning and community development projects for over the last twelve years of his career.
He is the founder and director of the local Indonesian NGO Yayasan Kota Kita, or Our City Foundation, whose mission is to improve participatory planning and budgeting processes by making information available to help citizens understand and take advantage of the opportunities that come with urbanization. Yayasan Kota Kita has worked throughout Indonesia in Makassar, Manado, Pekalongan, Jogyakarta and Jakarta, and is based in Solo.
John has also served as a technical advisor to UN-HABITAT Indonesia, the World Bank, Mercy Corps Indonesia and The Asia and previously worked in Latin America and Africa.
And of course, we can’t forget the man who will be our Host and MC this year- Ernest Prakasa!
A TEDxUbud crowd favorite last year, Ernest was both a performer and a speaker. He delivered a blistering routine on Ubud inhabitants before schooling us all on the importance of breastfeeding.
We are so happy he agreed to be our Host for 2014!
Take one part funny man and one part dedicated father who knows what’s best for infant health, and you have Ernest Prakasa, the first Indonesian comic to tour across the country. A year before his tour he co-founded Ayah ASI, the first Indonesian fathers’ breastfeeding initiative, to courageously battle the corporations forcing baby formula products on consumers and violating ingredient regulations.
Born and raised in Jakarta, Ernest spent 10 years in the music industry before pursuing stand-up comedy. He co-founded @StandUpIndo, Indonesia’s prominent stand-up comedy community. He received his bachelor’s degree from Padjadjaran University, Bandung. He lives in Denpasar with his wife Meira and their daughter, Sky.
So, that’s all, folks! If you have a ticket, we will see you there. Unfortunately all the tickets have been sold, however you can follow all the developments on the day by using the #TEDxUbud hashtag on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
Thanks for reading!
About TEDx, x = independently organized event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)
TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a four-day conference in California almost 30 years ago, TED has grown to support those world-changing ideas with multiple initiatives. The two annual TED Conferences invite the world’s leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes on a diverse mix of topics. Many of these talks are then made available, free, at TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Isabel Allende and former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown. The TED2014 Conference will take place in Vancouver, British Columbia, along with the TEDActive simulcast in neighboring Whistler. TEDGlobal 2014 will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
TED’s media initiatives include TED.com, where new TED Talks are posted daily; the Open Translation Project, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as translations from volunteers worldwide; the educational initiative TED-Ed; and TEDBooks, short e-books on powerful ideas. TED has established the annual TED Prize, where exceptional individuals with a wish to change the world get help translating their wishes into action; TEDx, which supports individuals or groups in hosting local, self-organized TED-style events around the world; and the TED Fellows program, helping world-changing innovators from around the globe to amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities.
